Jakira Ahmed

M.A. student and DAHL fellow Jakira Ahmed received her B.A. in English and Art History, with Honors, from Wayne State University (Detroit) in 2025. She completed two major papers during her undergraduate career, “Beyond the Binary: Gender and Space in the Art of Helen McNicoll (1879-1915)” and “Art, Travel and Orientalism: Anna Richards Brewster (1870-1952) in French Algeria.” The former was presented at the 2025 Warrior Scholars Conference (Detroit), 2025 National Conference on Undergraduate Research (Pittsburgh), and 7th Annual SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium. It was also published in The Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research and won the Best Essay Award. The latter was presented at the 8th Annual SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium. 

Her research interests include European and American art of the long nineteenth century, examining cross-cultural exchange, empire and tourism in the work of women artists, part of a broader inquiry into how the visual is underpinned by ideologies of power and politics.
